Playing Big by Tara Mohr

I came across this book by following Tara’s blog after stumbling across it through an Instagram promotional ad. Working a lot with women looking to make changes in their lives but fearful and unsure of how to go about it, I was curious to see what Tara – a fellow coach – had to say.

From a very young age, Tara noticed a serious lack of female voices in her studies, making it her mission to help empower women and teach them how to make their mark.

Playing Big does exactly that. It focusses exclusively on helping women overcome assumed and preconditioned shortcomings to play and make it big in whatever they want to accomplish in life. It provides the necessary tools that women can implement in order to find their voices, come out of their shells and achieve success. Regardless of what that success looks like, we all aspire towards something.

One of the areas that most resonated with me was where she touched on criticism and feedback. I’ve always struggled with criticism, particularly as Tara rightly states when it mirrors the way we feel about ourselves. However, when it comes to feedback, Tara claims that feedback isn’t actually a reflection on us, but instead on those giving it. With this in mind, it helps to not take feedback so personally. It doesn’t mean that you ignore the feedback being given but you should really only assess the feedback from your target audience in order to achieve what you’ve set out to accomplish.

Belittled by narrow labels of how we should be, struggling with our inner critic and criticism as we aim for a non existent idea of perfection, dealing with self doubt and a need for approval, Playing Big shows the many ways women play it small that can be overcome from the inside out so that women can make an impact in their own lives. This is a great book for women to address some of the blocks holding them back in life with useful journalling exercises and advice to keep you from selling yourself short. Read this book and give yourself that chance at Playing Big!
